How And Where To Get Great Ideas While Rejuvenating?

It’s been a while since I wrote anything about how I and Tatiana spend time together. On Sunday we went to swimming pool and sauna. We loved it! Here is why we (especially I) love going to sauna and swimming pool.

But first I must inform you that Tatiana was on her one-week trip to Singapore where she was attending an international conference on the bunker trading education (this is what she is currently doing as her main occupation). She got back Sunday morning.

I am happy that she is back and safe.

If you are one of my subscribers, you should remember that I was planning to make a small surprise for Tatiana when she would get back. Unfortunately, I did not know what that surprise would be.

Finally after giving some thought to it I decided that the surprise will be two bouquets of roses (white and red) and a personalized puppy poodle with his own birth certificate and of course a lovely name. Here is a snapshot of what my small surprise turned out to be.

I placed the flowers and the puppy (sitting in the box home that said “I’m going home”) behind the curtains on the windowsill so that when I walked her to the window and asked her to pull the curtains a big smile came on her face when she would see that puppy and the flowers. And she certainly did smile :)

Now, let me tell you where and how I got this idea.
This goes back to the reason why I love swimming and going to sauna. I came up with this idea when I was under water swimming. What? What does it have to do with water and swimming you should ask. Well, let me ask you this first. Have you ever gone for a good run? And when I say a “good run” I mean while running (or jogging) do you remember this little voice inside of your head that talks to you all the time? Ok, that’s the same with me when I swim. I also have this little voice inside of my head talking to me all the time. The secret is if you empower that voice, or if you ask indirectly that voice to be a little bit creative it may become by far the greatest source of your imagination.

When I am trying to create something new while swimming, something very powerful happens. My brain experiences a vibrant inflow of ideas and solutions that just keep rushing in my head. My brain seems to filter those solutions much more dynamically when I am in water than if I do that in any other setting e.g. sitting in front of a computer.

How does that apply to you?
Well, think about it this way. We all have some issues, challenges or concerns we want to resolve. Even though some may not think that way but we need to focus on the solution part, after we’ve clearly identified the problem. And activities like swimming, running and sauna are the best conditions for creative ideas to flow into you.

Do you know why it happens?
When we are relaxed, our brains tend to concentrate on bright and positive things (that’s how it works always). Therefore, we don’t want to concentrate on the problem part, but rather the solution. When I am in or under water in peace and silence, the solution ideas tend to pour into my head. Therefore, it is not a coincidence that a lot of people experience “AHA” moments while taking a shower because this is where they tend to be relaxed, more receptive and their imagination knows no limits.

Of course there is a drawback. And that is when ideas come to you while in water, you can’t really capture them in writing. But you don’t need to remember all of them. Use your associative memory to remember at least one or two ideas/solutions that came to you and you think are the most creative or important. And certainly when you get back home, you should jot those ideas/solutions down to make sure you don’t forget them. Then you could further develop those ideas later on.

This technique can be applied to any area of your life, be it formulating a thesis statement, coming up with new product ideas or thinking of surprises one can make for his/her significant other. Try this powerful technique and you will be amazed how simple and small things can turn out into big and sophisticated ideas.

    Very nice point. And its absolutely true for me. I get my best ideas when i sleep or even when i eat alone. Chewing food in silence seems to be a relaxing factor. Strange but true. Maybe i was a cow in some previous birth.

    ha ha ha, Sudha, that’s funny on the cow part! Yes, you are right. And it is good that you pay attention to when you think are are most productive, most creative, most imaginative. Whenever you need a ’solution’ create those conditions and settings. Whether it holds true or not that you are more creative when you sleep or eat alone, you still send those positive signals to your brain to tune in a productive wave. That’s what artists/writers do! They know which place they get most inspired at. Well done! Also thanks a lot for reading!
