Randy Pausch - The Last Lecture

Randy Pausch - Last Lecture

Randy Pausch is the person I want to talk about in this post. He is best known for his enormous contribution to computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. Randy, as a person, is not here with us anymore (passed away on July 25, 2008 from pancreatic cancer) but his soul still lives in the hearts of millions of people. Randy got a lot of media attention after his famous “The Last Lecture” speech that he gave at Carnegie Mellon on September 18, 2007. The speech was titled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” and if you care a little bit about your life, please please please watch this video from the beginning to the end. It is good for your life. And you listen carefully prepare to learn lots of important things as well as be entertained.

The 10 great lessons include:

1. The inspiration and permission to dream is huge

2. You’ve got to get fundamentals down

3. The brickwalls are there for a reason. The brickwalls are there not to keep us out. The brickwalls
are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brickwalls are there to stop the people who do not want it badly enough. They are there to stop other people. Brickwalls let us show our real dedication.

4. I am dying and I am having fun and I am going to keep having fun every day I have left because there is no other way to play it.

5. Help others.

6. How to get people to help you? - Tell the truth; - Be earnest; - Apologize when you screw up; - Focus on others, not yourself.

7. Don’t bail; the best gold is at the bottom of barrels of crap.

8. Don’t complain; just work harder.

9. Be good at something; it makes you valuable.

10. Be prepared: “luck” is where preparation meets opportunity.

The final note: it is not about how to achieve your dreams, it is about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.

Much love to Randy and his wonderful family.
